Total Training Update
September saw Total Training working in Edinburgh delivering another 3 day course at the Festival Theatre. This was the completion of a contract that started in June. At the same time, we were delivering another 3 day course in London at the Cockpit Theatre for City of Westminster College. This is a bi-annual event at the Cockpit and is always sold out within days of CWC advertising the course. Matt and Adam led 12 participants through the three days in a slightly tailored version of the course we run in Birmingham whilst Chris led the Edinburgh course.
We then had the PLASA Rigging Conference which Chris has curated for PLASA Events since 2010. This year was a change from the usual format, having two unstructured sessions chaired by Unusual Rigging‘s MD Alan Jacobi and in the afternoon Mark Surtees, MD of Outback Rigging. Both companies sponsor the conference and their financial support is crucial to its viability. The opening speaker was Morris Lyda, the legendary production manager of acts ranging from David Bowie to Pink Floyd, The Blues Brothers and more recently the Sydney Olympics opening ceremony. Morris was supported by equally legendary guests Ronan Willson and Andrew Zweck. Peter Heath, MD of PLASA gave us a renewed pledge to support all the work that PLASA has done in the rigging sector, announced the planned launch of ICoPER between ESTA and PLASA, a joint project to produce a model code of practice for anyone wishing to write a rigging code of practice. PLASA Skills’ Nicky Greet then gave an update on the progress made during 2017 with the NRC and the other PLASA initiatives currently under development for the rigging sector.
When Chris gets back from Sweden where he’s acting as Internal Verifier for the Nordic NRC Centre in Malmo’s NRC assessments, he’s off to the Yvonne Arnaud in Guildford for a work at height course which brings September’s training activity to a close.
Next month Total Training will be delivering three 3 day courses, attendance at the UK Theatre (TMA/SoLT) conference and two return visits to the Forest Arts Centre in Walsall to complete their rigging course.
