London Olympics – Baby Phoenix

“Can you make a set piece to fly Darcey Bussell from the roof of the stadium to the centre of the field of play? No pressure for us then! We want to detonate fireworks from the tips of the wings on the way down! OK so can we have Darcey come to the factory to ensure she fits and feels comfortable and safe. Sorry no she is still in Australia! ” and thus started the design work on the Baby Phoenix……

So this relatively small piece, of all the pieces we manufactured for the Olympics, probably had the largest set of assumptions made in order to complete the construction. The item was tested to 10 times it’s capacity requirement and was finished in a fire effect colour scheme and duly delivered it to Three Mills Studios for flying practice. Needless to say that it all worked and Darcey lived to tell the tale, and it looked pretty damn spectacular as well…..
